Fellowships, Internships, and Scholarly Opportunities

The Smithsonian American Art Museum is one of the nation's leading centers for the study of American art. The museum offers academic opportunities for scholars at the graduate level and above, research opportunities for visiting scholars, and professional museum training for college seniors and graduate students.

Fellowships

Amelia Goerlitz, Fellowship Program Coordinator

The museum supports pre- and postdoctoral scholars in residence to conduct research on topics in American art and visual culture. The museum's Fellowship Program office is a suite with sixteen workstations and an informal meeting space dedicated to accommodating our short- and long-term visiting scholars who have access to the museum's library and other research resources. Scholars are selected in an annual competition administered by the museum and the Smithsonian's Office of Research Training and Services.

Internships

Judith Hollomon, Intern Program Officer

Since the establishment of its Intern Program in 1968, the museum has provided career training to hundreds of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as others seeking self-enrichment. Internships are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters. Supplementary workshops and seminars provide exposure to a wide range of museum careers and opportunities. Interns are selected in an annual competition administered by the museum.

Publication Awards

The Smithsonian American Art Museum offers several awards for outstanding scholarship in American art.

• Charles C. Eldredge Prize for outstanding scholarship in American art in a book-length publication.

• Patricia and Phillip Frost Essay Award for the most distinguished contribution to American Art, the scholarly journal of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
