A dislocated family is grouped on a mattress in postures of helplessness as bystanders watch the family's household possessions being removed from their home. Shinn had witnessed the eviction of an old, bearded musician from his apartment on the Lower East Side, an incident that contributed to this dramatic depiction of misery.
