Robert Turner's Akan refers to the Akan nation of Ghana. No doubt Turner wished to express a
sense of the timeless flow of life in a highly ritualized, so-called "primitive" culture. In fact, the
Akan people have enjoyed a well-developed civilization for centuries. Although this vessel
appears at first glance to be rather haphazard and crude, it is in fact a sophisticated study of
architectonic form and finish.
