Amazonia itself is an exercise in organically blending enamel with the natural world.” Letter from the artist, 2003

Debbie Wetmore made Amazonia using found objects such as earthenware, bone, shell, glass, wood, and horn. These elements were arranged to evoke a sense of the art of the native cultures of the Amazon basin. In among the natural materials Wetmore placed a spark plug and a lace bobbin to suggest a male and female element.
