Sculpture curator Karen Lemmey (right) introduces the Smithsonian American Art Museum Fellows to In Memoriam by Harold Tovish

The Smithsonian American Art Museum hosts one of the nation’s oldest and most distinguished fellowship programs in American art. Our residential fellowships support research on art, craft, and visual culture of the United States. Graduate students and advanced scholars alike benefit from access to a wealth of resources and a community of distinguished curators and art historians. Since its founding in 1970, the fellowship program has served more than 410 fellows and 165 visiting scholars.

The Joshua C. Taylor Fellowship, named after the program’s founder, is supported by alumni and friends of the fellowship program. This fellowship is awarded to doctoral candidates researching American art.

The George Gurney Fellowship Endowment Fund, established by Peter and Paula Lunder, honors the distinguished career of the museum’s former curator of American sculpture. This fellowship funds pre- and postdoctoral research in American sculpture. The American Art Museum holds over 2,700 sculptural works—the world’s largest single collection of American sculpture. Sculpture curator Karen Lemmey joined the staff in 2012 upon Dr. Gurney’s retirement, and serves as an advisor to Smithsonian fellows researching American sculpture.

The William H. Truettner Fellowship Endowment Fund, established by Peter and Paula Lunder to support research in American art, is a tribute to Mr. Truettner’s career of nearly fifty years as a curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum.

If you would like information on how to include the fellowship program in your will or how to contribute through a life income gift, please contact Fellowship and Academic Programs Coordinator, Amelia Goerlitz, at GoerlitzA[at]si.edu or (202) 633-8353.
